Sonia Kovalevsky Day

by: Kaitlin Jaggars and Hannah Truitt

On November 13th, the University of Central Missouri hosted Sonia Kovalevsky Day for female students who excel in mathematics. Seniors Kaitlin Jaggars, Allie Renfro, and Hannah Truitt as well as junior Lizzie Bowman participated with four middle school students and the seventh grade math teacher Ms. Janine Brand. The girls chose two activities to engage in. After breaking into two locked boxes during “Sonia’s Great Escape” and watching how soap film forms on frames in “Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble” they took a partner Problem Solving test to compete for prizes.

Seniors Allie Renfro and Hannah Truitt were the top scoring high school team and they won graphing calculators! Allie Renfro sees the day as an “empowering event” and is very glad that she got to go. The day was a great experience for all of the girls and RHS looks forward to sending more students again in future years.
